Burkina Faso says abducted Italian, Canadian still alive

Two foreigners that were abducted in Burkina Faso in December are alive but may have been moved to another country, the country’s government spokesperson said.

An Italian man was abducted together with his girlfriend in December 2018 when driving through Burkina Faso.

In an interview with Italy’s state television, Burkina Faso’s government spokesperson Remis Fulgance Dandjinou said the two – Luca Tacchetto, 30, and 34-year-old Canadian Edith Blais – were no longer in Burkina Faso.

He however gave assurances that they were still alive.

“We are certain that their life is not in danger. We can say that these people are still alive.”

Burkina Faso has been dogged by a wave of abductions since 2015, mostly done for ransom.

The country is also struggling with the threat of terrorism as various terror groups have often staged attacks across the country.

In his interview, Dandjinou said; “The important thing is that there has been no homicide, otherwise we would have already recovered the bodies.”

Search efforts are still underway.
