Nigeria win 9-goal thriller against Tanzania in AFCON U17 opener

Nigeria beat hosts Tanzania 5-4 at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam in the opening game of the African Cup of Nations Under-17 tournament.

Olatomi Olaniyan opened the scoring for Nigeria on 21 minutes only for Edmund John to level for the hosts a minute later.

Wisdom Ubani and Akinkunmi Amoo each scored to give the Nigerians a two-goal lead at halftime.

Tanzania pulled a goal back seven minutes into the second half through Kelvin John before Suleman Shaibu’s own goal saw the hosts draw level.

Edmund John converted a penalty on 60 minutes to make it 4-3 for the Serengeti Boys. Wisdom Ubani equalized for Nigeria netting his second of the game on 72 minutes. Nigeria completed their comeback when Ibraheem Jabaar scored 11 minutes from time. Nigeria then held on to secure the win.

In the other game in Group A, Angola edged Uganda 1-0.

Nigeria leads the standings in the group ahead of Angola. Tanzania is third while Uganda are bottom.
