Kenya is developing a policy to minimize the costs of medicines in the country, a senior health ministry official said on Saturday.

Rashid Amana, chief administrative secretary of the Ministry of Health, said that the policy will help Kenyans to access and afford quality medication.

“We are looking at the drivers of the high cost of medication in the country in consultation with the pharmaceutical firms so that we agree on modalities of reducing the costs,” Amana told journalists in Nairobi.

Amana said that the government is reviewing the tariffs, supply chain and regulatory issues to make health care affordable.

The official revealed that the government has set up a health technology assessment committee to look into the medicine prices in the country.

“The committee will ensure that the pricing of brand name medicine is similar in all health facilities in the country,” he added.
