DR Congo police shoot two students dead

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s police shot two students dead during protests in the capital, Kinshasa.

The students at the Kinshasa University held protests on Monday demanding an immediate resumption of learning, which was interrupted due to a lecturers’ strike over pay.

The demonstrations turned violent and one student was shot by the police.

News of the student’s death on Thursday sparked another riot in the university, with police moving in to deal with the protesters.

The DR Congo police confirmed that a second student was shot dead in the chaos.

A spokesman said 12 police officers were injured and buildings as well as vehicles were vandalised.

On Friday morning police used tear gas and fired in the air to disperse an angry crowd of students.
