US forces say killed IS militant in airstrike

US forces carried out an airstrike in Libya in coordination with the country’s Government of National Accord, killing one Islamic State terrorist, a statement from the US Africa Command (US AFRICOM) said.

The airstrike was conducted near the desert town of Bani Walid, located to the southeast of the capital Tripoli.

Libya has been dogged by jihadist insurgency for more than a decade, as militant groups fight for control of the country.

The country’s conflicts started following the 2011 ouster and killing of then president Muammar Gaddafi, which created an administration void that various militant groups and human smuggling gangs sought to fill.

The statement by the US AFRICOM said the United States would continue with its fight against militants with the aim of ridding the country of terror groups.

“The United States will not relent in its mission to degrade, disrupt and destroy terrorist organizations and bring stability to the region. We are committed to maintaining the pressure on the terror network and preventing terrorists from establishing a safe haven,” it said.
