At least three intruders interrupted a session in the upper chamber of Nigeria’s parliament on Wednesday and snatched the mace, the Senate’s ceremonial staff, told Reuters.

From the Reuters witness account the men entered the chamber before picking up the mace and leaving with it in a swoop that lasted less than two minutes.

The mace is the symbol of authority at the senate and that incident is said to have left the upper chamber of the nation’s parliament in disarray as lawmakers were reportedly seen running helter skelter.

Decisions taken in the Senate cannot be approved without the presence of the mace.
