Uganda’s Cheptegei wins gold at Commonwealth Games

Ugandan long-distance-runner Joshua Cheptegei has won the 5000 metre gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

After a reportedly slow start, the 21-year-old took charge of the race in the last five laps. He finished with a time of 13:50.83 for his first gold at a senior level games – winning Uganda’s first gold at the Gold Coast.

There was some last gasp drama in the final lap as Canada’s Mohammed Ahmed challenged Cheptegei – but could only hold on for silver, at a time of 13:52.78.

Kenyan teenager Edward Zakayo won bronze with a time of 13:54.06, and Uganda’s Thomas Ayeko came in at fourth in 13:54.78.
