Morocco began their CHAN 2018 campaign on a high by hammering Mauritania 4-0, much to the joy of thousands of fans who had turned up to catch the first game of the continental competition.

The floodgates did not open until the 66 minute, thanks to an inspired defensive performance by the visitors.

The determined hosts however exhibited their attacking prowess from then on, as Ayoub Kaabi found the back of the net from a neat team display.

Ismail el Haddad added a second goal six minutes later as Morocco continued to maraud their opponents defensive set up.

El Kaabi added a second in the 80th minute before being substituted, but the hosts still had enough time to add a fourth through Achraf Bencharki.

Morocco started with three of 2017 CAF Champions League-winning Wydad Casablanca team, but only brought on star attackers Achraf Bencharki and Walid el Karti in the closing stages.

The hosts now top Group A ahead of Sunday’s game pitting Guinea against Sudan as the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca.

Group B teams will also be in action, as Cote d’Ivoire take on debutants Namibia as Zambia face Uganda in Marrakech.
