Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Eboue – a member of the Cote d’Ivoire squad that reached the finals of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations – is struggling to fend for himself after losing almost everything from his days as a millionaire.
In a report published by The Mirror, the 34-year-old Arsenal legend has lost all he earned in his seven-year stint in the Premier League, and is at times forced to sleep on the floor at a friend’s house to escape authorities who want him to give up his last remaining possession, a mansion in London.
The Ivorian has been through a lot recently, including losing his wife in a bitter divorce – which came with a heartbreaking estrangement from his three kids.
In the report, The Mirror says the former footballer has contemplated suicide to escape the embarrassment that his situation has put him through.
Eboue now travels by bus and even washes his clothes by hand because he has no washing machine.
The publication of the report came as a shock to many people, most of whom sympathize with the defensive legend.
The Ivorian was a fan favourite at Arsenal, owing much of that to his goal celebrations and theatrics during games.
He blames his situation to bad advisers, which surprisingly include his former wife.
Many social media users have taken to the platforms to send their supportive messages to him, with some even calling upon the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) to come to his rescue.
Here are some of those reactions;
This Eboue's story is a sad one. I feel for him.
Someone that reached UCL & AFCON finals. Earned €8m in turkey.
Now his ex-wife won custody of their kids & control of all his assets. He's gone broke, sleeps on the floor of his friend's house & can't afford a washing machine.
