The United States military in collaboration with Somalia’s government forces on Tuesday conducted an airstrike targeting al-Shabaab militants, killing three of them, the U.S. Africa Command said on Wednesday.
The operation was carried out in central Bay Region of Somalia, about 75 kilometers west of the capital, Mogadishu.
“In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, the Department of Defense conducted a precision airstrike in central Somalia against al-Shabaab militants on Tues., Sept. 5 at approximately 9:50 a.m. local Somalia time, killing three (3) terrorists,” the command said in a statement.

The al-Qaeda affiliated terror group has waged a decade-long insurgency in the Horn of Africa, aiming to topple the Somali government and enforce a strict sharia rule.
U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this year permitted the Pentagon to launch airstrikes in Somalia.
A small group of American forces were deployed to the country soon after, the first time the country has sent troops there since they pulled out in 1994.
