UNICEF: Boko Haram using more child suicide bombers

The United Nations has condemned the use of child suicide bombers by West Africa based Islamist militants Boko Haram.

This comes after a disturbing new report released by UNICEF earlier this week.

The report says that Boko Haram is using more child suicide bombers than ever before. The Nigerian militant group has used at least 83 children as bombers since the beginning of January this year.

That number is four times higher than in 2016. 55 of the children were girls, most of them under the age of 15. One was a baby strapped to a girl.

The Boko Haram insurgency is in its eighth year.

The militants have killed more than 20,000 people and displaced millions.

UNICEF says it’s extremely concerned over the increase in the use of child suicide bombers, calling it appalling.
