Gunmen kill 17 in attack on Burkina Faso restaurant


Gunmen in a pickup truck open fire on customers in a Turkish restaurant leaving 17 dead in Burkina Faso. The government managed two kill two of the attackers.

Witnesses said three gunmen arrived at a Turkish restaurant in a pickup truck on Sunday evening and opened fire on customers seated outside.

‘A terrorist attack at Istanbul restaurant on Ouagadougou’s Kwame Nkrumah Avenue claimed 17 victims, their nationalities are yet to be confirmed,’ a government statement said, adding that 12 people had been injured.

Gunfire could be heard almost seven hours after the attack began, into the early hours of the morning.

‘We evacuated 11 people but one of them, a Turk, died on arriving at hospital,’ a paramedic told AFP.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the violence.

“This is a terrorist attack,” Communications Minister Remi Dandjinou told a news conference. He said the toll was provisional because the security operation was still underway
