The government of China has donated over 1,500 tonnes of rice to South Sudan as emergency food reports Xinhua.

China made a pledge in April this year to provide 8,800 tonnes of rice to South Sudan due to the severe food shortage the country is experiencing.

The first batch of 60 containers of rice were handed to South Sudan’s Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC)with the rest of the shipment expected to arrive over the coming months according to Li Xiangfeng, charge d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in South Sudan.

The deputy chairperson of the RRC, Paul Dhel Gum, appreciated the government of China  for the donation that will go a long way in tackling food shortage in the most vulnerable areas of the East African nation affected by conflict and severe food insecurity.

The United Nations estimates that at least 7.5 million people across South Sudan are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection, due to the civil war that had torn the country apart for more than three years .
