China donates $1 million to Somalia through IOM

China has donated a $1million  multi-sector assistance aid that will target – thousands of vulnerable communities fleeing conflict and drought in Somalia

“In May this year, representatives of Chinese government and IOM signed an agreement in Beijing – Chinese government made a cash contribution of USD 1 million which shall be used by IOM for the project under multi sector assistance to IDPs and vulnerable communities – and returnees in Somalia including providing non-food items and emergency shelters – and comes as parts of China’s commitment at the just concluded Belt and Road Forum”. Qin Jian , Chinese Ambassador to Somalia said

The donation to IOM comes as the organization is dealing with a major crisis as conflict and drought in Somalia continues to displace thousands every month

According to Somali authorities – five million people remain in urgent need of humanitarian aid – including new returnees from camps in neighboring Kenya

Mogadishu says its priority is to save lives and has thus created a special ministry of humanitarian affairs and disaster management to oversee relief efforts in the country

Among the worst affected regions include parts of south central, Punt land and Somaliland

In April, China donated ten million dollars to UN’s World Food Program through its emergency response program. The grant allowed WFP to deploy emergency aid to more than 200K – for up to four months

As Somalia deals with one of the largest humanitarian crisis in decades – China has played an important role in supporting Somalia and UN organizations dealing with the crisis on the ground, signalling China’s commitment to the Horn of African nation

Thousands have returned from refugee camps in Yemen and neighbouring Kenya – and within the country – estimates indicate that up to 700K have been displaced as a result of conflict and drought between November 2016 and May 2017 – and as Mogadishu deals with the crisis – its projects like this one initiated by China that will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of millions in the country.
