Over 7000 passengers have travelled with the newly launched Standard Gauge Railway in Kenya, Madaraka Express, reports Business Daily.

“Over the last week we have experienced a daily surge in passenger numbers. The growing numbers demonstrate the vital role Kenya Railways plays in our nation’s transportation system; we are definitely off to a strong start.” said managing director Kenya Railways Athanas Maina.

The Kenya Railways Managing Director added that, “The combination of unrivalled comfort and convenience means that we are well placed to meet the growing demand as passengers increasingly opt for our services over the existing means.”

Commuters are using the two express trains that operate daily from both directions between the capital city Nairobi and the coastal city of Mombasa.

The railway firm announced plans to introduce the inter-county trains by July that will make stops at seven railway stations between the two cities.

“Without a doubt we have many passengers who intend to ply their businesses across the five counties that the line traverses and this new train will ensure that we play our role in devolution by connecting businesses across the counties”, Mr. Maina explained.

SGR train will also introduce a new online ticket payment platform that will be unveiled on Monday, to ensure convenience in travel for all customers.
