The Libyan militant group blamed for the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi has disbanded.
The Ansar al-Sharia group has announced that its leadership has been wiped out while battling the Libyan National Army.
It’s believed most of its members now belong to ISIL, so they remain a threat.
In 2012 the group attacked the U.S. embassy in the eastern city of Benghazi. Ambassador Chris Stevens died in that attack.
Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State at the time. The incident featured prominently during campaigns for the U.S. presidency last year.
