Ethiopian Airlines begins direct flights to southwestern China

Ethiopian airline has started direct flights to southwestern China’s capital of the Sichuan Province, Chengdu.

This is the second direct air route from Chengdu to Africa. Air Mauritius is the other airlines operating direct flights from the Chinese city to Mauritius.

The Ethiopian airlines will have direct flights to the city every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with 9.5 hours per trip according to Xinhua.

Chengdu is the fifth Chinese city in the Ethiopian airline flies to, it also has direct air routes to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

“We are glad to launch services to Chengdu, our fifth gateway to The Republic of China. Since our first flight 43 years ago, China has been a key market and it is now the largest per country market in our system. Using the geocentric location advantage of our hub in Addis Ababa we are connecting China, the world’s second largest economy and Africa’s biggest trade and investment partner,” said Mr. Tewolde GebreMariam, Group CEO Ethiopian Airlines.

“Since we flew to China for the first time 43 years ago, we have seen China as the most important market,” said Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines.

Ethiopian Airlines operates daily flights to Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong and also 10 weekly flights to Guangzhou. The addition of the new route will increase the airline’s weekly flights to China to 34.
