South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir called for a national day of prayer to seek divine help in working for peace and forgiveness across the country.

“I pray not for condemnation but forgiveness. I hand over my heart and body for your blessing.” Kiir is quoted to pray today by eye radio

In a statement broadcast on state-owned Radio and Television (SSBC) on Thursday, Kiir appealed to citizens to shun violence and seek forgiveness from God through prayer.

The national day of prayer is a prelude to the national dialogue declared by the President late last year.

The country has been embroiled in civil war since December 2013, when Kiir accused his former deputy, Riek Machar, of attempting a coup. The war has been fought between their supporters.
