Visit and develop your constituencies or face the sack – President Lungu orders ministers

Zambian President Edgar Lungu has threatened to sack ministers who fail to visit their constituencies regularly, local media outlet Lusaka Times reports.

The president made the remarks at a public rally held in Samfya District.

He told the ministers to juggle their duties as Members of Parliament and as ministers, saying that if they can’t handle both, they shouldn’t be ministers.

“If you are not capable of being both a minister and an MP, choose one job. I am warning those ministers that are MP’S but not visiting their constituencies soon I will soon let you go,” he said.

Zambian cabinet ministers are appointed by the president from parliament, and most often the appointments are rewards of loyalty.

Lusaka Times reports President Lungu to say that failure by civil servants to visit their rural homes slows down the government’s development agenda.

Also, the president tasked Members of Parliament (MPs) and ministers from the province to ensure that service delivery to the people was enhanced as the PF promised this to the people during last year’s electoral campaigns.
