AFCON 2017: Ghana to battle Burkina Faso for third place

Wounded sides Ghana and Burkina Faso will clash today in Gabon as they seek to secure the third place after failing to reach the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations final.

Burkina Faso lost seven-time AFCON champions Egypt through a penalty shoot-out after they had played out a 1-1 draw.

Ghana on the other hand were humiliated 2-0 by Cameroon extending the Black Stars 35-year-wait for continental glory.

The game that will be played tonight at the Stade de Port-Gentil is a curtain-raiser of tomorrow’s huge clash that will pit two of Africa’s most successful football sides.

While Egypt are the most successful side in the AFCON competition having won seven titles, their opponents have won the continental trophy four times, and will be looking to add a fifth.

The Black Stars finished as runners-up in the 2015 edition while Burkina Faso were runners-up in the 2013 edition.

Both sides had hoped to reach the final to be played on Sunday but came short, and will now have to settle for the third-place battle.

The Ghanaians have now reached six consecutive semi-finals at the AFCON competition, but have only reached the finals on two occasions, in 2010 and 2015.

Burkina Faso have a compact team, and will be buoyed by the fact that they are the only side to have scored against Egypt in the Gabon show-down.

The Game will be played at 1900GMT.
