Activists want South Africa to halt exports of lions bred in captivity

A proposal by South Africa’s government to allow the export of 800 lion skeletons has been met with heavy criticism.

The lions were bred in captivity. Animal activists are up in arms, saying the move could threaten wild lion populations. They want government to establish a zero export quota — suspending trade in lions — or their body parts — bred in captivity.
