AFCON hosts Gabon frustrated to a draw against debutants Guinea-Bissau

AFCON hosts Gabon settled for a 1-1 draw with debutants Guinea-Bissau in the continental showpiece’s opener on Saturday.

Borrusia Dortmund’s prolific striker netted Gabon’s goal, the first of the tournament, in the 52nd minute, lurching onto a Denis Bouanga cross-shot.

Despite controlling most of the game, the hosts could not see the game through, with Guinea-Bissau scoring in stoppage time to snatch a valuable point.

Gabon wasted a few chances in the game, prompting the home fans to jeer the players at the end of the game to show their discontent.

The Panthers are the lowest ranked team going into the showpiece, standing at position 108 in the FIFA world rankings for January, but many still expected that they would dominate the opening game.

If they are to progress beyond the group and even further in this tournament however, Gabon must get Aubameyang to deliver his very best performances in all the games that lie ahead.

Gabon’s next game will be against Burkina Faso on Wednesday.
