UN Security Council backs observers for Aleppo

The United Nations Security Council has voted unanimously in favor of a resolution calling for UN officials and others to be able to monitor evacuations from eastern Aleppo.

The observers would also monitor the safety of civilians who remain in the Syrian city.

The French-drafted resolution also “demands that all parties allow complete, immediate, unconditional, safe and unhindered access” for humanitarian aid to Aleppo.

With Russia’s backing, it’s the first show of unity in months among world powers on the crisis in Syria.
