Cameroon hopes to lure Liverpool’s Joel Matip back from exile ahead of AFCON showpiece

Cameroon are attempting to lure Liverpool defender Joel Matip out of his international exile in time to take part in the African Cup of Nations in January.

The centre-half has 27 senior caps but appears to have opted against furthering his international career.

The Liverpool summer arrival from Schalke has not featured for the Indomitable Lions since 2015, and is seen to be keen on staying with Liverpool rather than taking part in the continental showpiece.

Matip has been in excellent form for the Reds this season, making 11 appearances in the Premier League and scoring one goal in the process.

Cameroonian coach Hugo Broos confirmed that he intends to lure the defender back into the team.

Matip returned to training with Liverpool on Tuesday after missing Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Bournemouth with an ankle injury.

The defender is set to return to Jurgen Klopp’s side for Sunday’s visit of West Ham.
