From security guard to President. Meet Gambia’s new president



After 22 years at the helm of Gambia’s leadership, Yahya Jammeh’s reign came to a halt after his shock loss to an estate agent, Adama Barrow, who had himself confidently predicted victory over the long serving President.

Seven opposition parties united behind Barrow for this vote after senior officials from his party were arrested in July.

The incumbent rode on a pledge of change, promising free education and affordable healthcare, as well as bringing an end to the jailing of dissenting voices.
