Around 90 migrants are still missing after their boat capsized off the Libyan coast on Wednesday, the country’s coast guards have said.

A spokesman of the Libyan coast guards said the boat as carrying 129 migrants, 29 of whom were rescued.

The rest are still missing, and are feared to have drowned.

Three women and a child are among those missing.

The rubber boat is said to have been travelling from Garabulli loated about 50 kilometres from the capital Tripoli, though it is not clear where it was headed.

Strong sea waves are said to have tore the boat, causing water to leak into it until it eventually sank.

Libya has become a major departure point for migrants seeking to reach Europe due to the political situation and insecurity in the country that has created a void.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reports that about 3,740 immigrants have so far died in 2016 while attempting to cross the Mediterranean.
