Terrorists attack African Union base in Somalia

Al Shabaab terrorist suicide bomber attacked the African Union (AU) base in Beledwenye in central Somalia. The terrorist drove a vehicle laden with explosives into the AU base killing at least 17 peacekeepers from Djibouti reports Reuters.

According to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) 10 suspected Al Shabaab fighters were killed in the attack which was brought under control after reinforcement from the nearby base.

“There was a suicide attack targeting the Djiboutian military base in western Beledweyne,” said Abdullah Ibrahim, a local security official.

AMISOM military offensive was launched in 2014 by AU peacekeeping forces and the Somali army that has led to the being al-Shabab terrorists being pushed out of major strategic centres.

The terrorist group, which once ruled much of Somalia, wants to topple the Western-backed government in Mogadishu and drive out African AMISOM peacekeepers made up of soldiers from Kenya, Djibouti, Uganda, Ethiopia and other African nations.
