Senegalese striker Sadio Mane scored a goal and assisted another as Liverpool saw off a spirited West Bromwich Ablbion at the Anfield Stadium to move into second place, at least before Manchester City plays Southampton on Sunday.
Mane opened the scoring for the Reds in the 21st minute, receiving a pas from Roberto Firmino before slotting home past Ben Foster.
He would then turn provider for Philippe Countinho in the 36th minute to give Liverpool a two-goal cushion heading into the break.
Though West Brom came from the break more determined and seeking to pull the goals back, Liverpool held firm to collect all three points.
Gareth McAuley got West Brom’s sole goal in the 82nd minute.
Mane now has four goals and two assists for Liverpool this season, having joined from Southampton in the last transfer window.
