Street vendors in Zimbabwe are unhappy with how police have been treating them.
The hawkers have been protesting the seizure of their goods as a penalty for trading at undesignated sites. Despite availing thousands of legal vending sites, Harare has failed to accommodate a growing number of informal businesses. Rapid de-industrialization has fueled unemployment, driving thousands onto the streets in an effort to make ends meet. Efforts by the government to formalise the businesses have been unsuccessful.
The government is now seeking funding to help re-open factories and create jobs, but vendors are growing frustrated.
