Nigeria’s air force says it has killed a number of senior fighters of Islamists militant group Boko Haram and seriously wounded the group’s overall leader Abubakar Shekau in a raid on their hideout in Sambisa forest.

Government places attacked the militants inside the forest located in its northeast heartland on Friday, Reuters news agency reports the Nigerian air force to say.

“Their leader, so called ‘Abubakar Shekau’, is believed to be fatally wounded on his shoulders,” Reuters quotes military spokesperson Colonel Sani Kakusheka Usman to say.

This revelation comes as US Secretary of State John Kerry landed in the country in his two-nation tour of Africa.

Kerry was in Kenya on Monday and is due to travel to Saudi Arabia upon his completion of the Nigerian visit.
