US Secretary of State John Kerry to visit Africa amid fears of South Sudan’s return to war



US Secretary of State John Kerry is set to visit Africa next week for talks with senior government officials regarding various regional issues, the State Department said.

State Department spokesman John Kirby said the visit to Kenya would mainly focus on South Sudan’s peace process and Somalia’s political transition.

During his visit to Nigeria, Kerry will meet President Muhammadu Buhari to discuss cooperation on the fight against Islamists militant group Boko Haram, the Nigerian economy and human rights issues, Kirby said.

There are growing fears that South Sudan could slide back into civil war following the latest fighting that has rocked the capital Juba.

Riek Machar is reported to have fled the country foillowing last month’s fighting and replacement by President Salva Kiir as first vice president.
