17 die in grisly Uganda road crash

At least 17 people were killed and 12 others injured on Saturday in an accident that involved five vehicles on a Uganda highway, one of the worst crashes of its kind in the East African country.

National police spokesperson Polly Namaye said the five vehicles, including two passenger minibuses, were involved in the accident in Mpigi district, about 50 kilometers from the capital Kampala.

Initial investigations indicate that a private vehicle that was attempting to overtake another at a sharp corner rammed into a trailer, which then swerved and hit other vehicles.

The highway is said to be a busy one, used by trucks carrying imports from the Indian Ocean coast to Rwanda.
