The IAAF Ethics Board has provisionally suspended Athletics Kenya CEO Isaac Mwangi in the interests of the integrity of the sport.
The athletics world governing body made the announcement Monday as Kenya now faces a race against time to comply with the World Anti-Doping Agency code.
Mwangi was suspended for 180 days pending investigation of a complaint made against him in relation to “potential subversion of the anti-doping control process in Kenya”.
Mwangi, who says he has done nothing wrong, stood down as AK CEO last week, saying he was anxious to have his name cleared.
Kenya missed a deadline to prove to the World Anti-Doping Agency it was doing enough to combat doping, and the IAAF president, Sebastian Coe, refused to rule out the possibility of a ban.
The move to suspend Mwangi will heap more pressure on Kenya, who still face the threat of being banned from the Rio Olympics.
