President Peter Mutharika has been criticised for allegedly ill-treating former President Joyce Banda.
Former ruling Peoples’ Party (PP) alleged that Joyce Banda has not received her salary and benefits since leaving the office in 2014. Banda is entitled to a salary and other benefits under Malawi’s constitution.
The former President’s spokesperson, Andekuche Chanthunya, confirmed that Banda has not been receiving her salary or the other benefits.
Information Minister Jappie Mhlango denied the claims, stating that Banda has remained on government payroll and receiving all her benefits. Mhlango added that Joyce Banda refused some of the benefits such as living in a government home.
Banda’s spokesperson said the party will issue a statement once she returns to Malawi since she has been away from the country since she lost the controversial May 2014 elections to Mutharika.
