A team of United Nations ambassadors supposed to investigate the violations and abuses of human rights in Burundi have been refused entry into the East African country.

The investigative team formed by the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights has been unable to travel to Burundi because of a lack of response from the authorities there, the High Commissioner’s spokesperson is reported by BBC news agency as saying.

The team was supposed to “investigate violations and abuses of human rights” and there is an urgent need for this trip “given the rapidly deteriorating human rights situation”, Cecile Pouilly says.

The investigators were scheduled to arrive yesterday, and the High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein says he hopes the Burundian authorities will still respond to the visa requests.
