Kenya links UNHCR staff to terrorism

Kenya’s Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has linked some workers at the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to terrorism in Kenya.

Nkaissery said that refugee camps in the country have become havens for terrorists and their agents.

The linking of the UNHCR staff to terrorism is likely to give a new twist to efforts by the government to have the hundreds of thousands of refugees living in camps in Kenya repatriated.

“The planning of the Westgate attack was finalized in the camps. The weapons used in the attack on Garissa University College this year were ferried and hidden in the camps,” he said.

Last week, security agents uncovered a cache of arms as well as phones in Daadab.

Kenya hosts more that half a million refugees in various camps within its borders.
