African Union suspends Burkina Faso

The African Union says it has suspended Burkina Faso and will impose sanctions on coup leaders if they do not restore the interim government and release its senior officials.

The African Union has suspended Burkina Faso and imposed sanctions on the leaders of its military coup. AU also imposed a travel ban and asset freeze on General Gilbert Diendere and other coup leaders.

Soldiers from the elite presidential guard (RSP) stormed into a cabinet meeting on Wednesday and abducted President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Zida, disrupting a transition period due to end with polls next month. General Gilbert Diendere, a former spy chief, was named junta head the next day.

Uganda has termed the detention of the Prime Minister and other leaders as and I quote ” a terrorist act”.  This as troops tried to stop protesters from marching on the the capital Ouagadougou’s Revolution Square.

The latest coup was orchestrated by an elite army unit loyal to deposed president Blaise Compaore who claim that interim president Michel Kafando was excluding Compaore’s supporters from the upcoming October 11 polls.
