Juncker called on a compulsory distribution of 160,000 refugees among the 28 EU member states. The number distributed to each country would depend on GDP, population, unemployment rates and asylum applications already processed.
He also said control of the EU’s external borders must be strengthened.
The European Commission President also said that there will be a list of “safe countries of origins”. Few asylum applications by nationals from those countries are likely to succeed as these people would be hard pressed to justify violence or persecution against them.
