Somalia’s new tough law against sex abuse

Rape is frightening common in Mogadishu, especially for women living in camps for the displaced. Rights groups have highlighted the plight of women  in the city. Few cases are reported and police routinely fail to offer protection to women who do come forward.

According to UN and rights groups one third of rape victims in Somali are under 18 years.  The Ministry of Women and Human Rights has decided to act.

Somalia is promising tough new laws against sexual violence and Female Genital Mutilation. Both are perpetrated on a regular basis according to activists. The offences often go unreported because of the stigma attached to victims in the country.  CCTV’s Mohammed Hirmoge reports.
