Burundi opposition leaders wife was seriously injured after she was attacked by unidentified people in the Capital Bujumbura on Sunday.

Annonciate Haberisoni the wife to Agathon Rwasa the leading opposition leader in Burundi, was at the salon waiting to have her hair done when the attack reportedly happened.

According to witnesses, the gunmen fled after opening fire on Annonciate Haberisoni .

Police said they were investigating the attack.

Mr Rwasa is a former rebel leader and an influential member of the opposition Forces for National Liberation (FNL) party who came from exile in 2013.

Witnesses were quoted in the local media as saying that Mrs Haberisoni’s life was probably saved by her hair dresser who saw the gunman taking aim and pushed her out of the way.

Reports indicate that cases of crime have been on the rise in the country as it gears up for presidential elections later this year.

The country is also facing a tense political situation before its presidential election in June. People are questioning the right of President Pierre Nkurunziza to seek a third term.

President Pierre Nkurunziza has not yet indicated whether he will step down or run for a third term.

He took office in 2005 following the end of a 12-year civil war, which killed more than 300,000 people.

President Nkurunziza was first elected to the presidency in 2005. His election was the result of a national assembly vote, not a popular election. At the time, he was the only presidential candidate.

In 2010, voters elected  Nkurunziza to a second term, after the opposition candidate left the race.
