South Africa steps up aid relief for victims

Humanitarian aid to war-torn Yemen is starting to arrive, as the Port of Aden has re-opened. For months, aid agencies tried to reach hundreds of thousands of people in desperate need of food, water and health supplies. South African Gift of the Givers aid agency has begun packing containers filled with vital supplies to send.

Yemen’s civil war has brought the country to its knees. Since Houthi rebel fighters and forces loyal to the Yemeni government backed by Saudi Arabia started clashing, more than 4,500 people have been killed.

Yemen now faces a dire humanitarian situation with 13 million on the brink of starvation and more than five million in urgent need of assistance.
