Kenya won yet another gold medal at the ongoing Rio Olympics through Faith Kipyegon who gave a strong show to upset Ethiopia’s world record holder Genzebe Dibaba to win the women’s 1,500 meters race.

Kipyegon, the world’s fastest woman in the category this year, was happy to sit back in the early stages of the race, before she and Dibaba pulled clear of the pack.

Genzebe who was seen as the favourite to clinch gold in the race, led with just 200 meters to the finish line but the 22-year-old Kenyan made a strong charge past her to clock a winning time of four minutes 8.92 seconds.

“It was an amazing race,” a delighted Kipyegon said after the race. “I needed to focus for the middle because I knew Genzebe is so fast and I really had to kick on the last lap.”

Dibaba held on to win Silver, while American former world champion Jenny Simpson took Bronze.

Following Kiptagon’s victory, Kenya moved up the medal’s table to 16 to become the leading country from Africa.
