Interior ministers from Europe, North Africa and the Mediterranean region gathered in Rome, Italy, to discuss measures aimed at fighting people smuggling and curbing illegal migration.
The two-day meeting was attended by ministers from Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, France, and Germany among others, as well as the European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship.
In an effort to crackdown on people smuggling, the EU has set aside 215 million dollars for North African countries, to help them control their borders and another 13.1 million dollars to Italy to help with border control and migrant rescue efforts.
The Contact Group on Migration, under the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, will hold another meeting in Tunisia, later this year.
