Tanzanian President John Magufuli has ordered that all 258 doctors who qualified for employment in Kenya to be employed locally, rescinding his agreement with Kenya to have the medical practitioners reports the Citizen.
“President Magufuli has decided that all 258 doctors who were waiting to go to Kenya should be employed locally. Following the decision we will, in due course, publish in the ministry website names of the doctors and the areas they will be posted,” The Minister for Health, Ms. Ummy Mwalimu in Tanzania made the announcement today.
The Minister further explained that the Kenyan government had failed to reach an agreement with the Tanzanian government on terms that would enable the Tanzanian doctors to work in the neighbouring country comfortably.
This comes after a court in Kenya put barred the Kenyan government from proceeding with the recruitment of the Tanzanian doctors.
Kenya had opted for Tanzanian doctors as measures to deal with Kenyan striking doctors. Over 500 Tanzanian doctors had expressed interest in moving to Kenya to facilitate the crippling public health after being paralysed by the striking doctors.
